Council tax pledge

By Will • Jan 22nd, 2010 • Category: Blog

As someone aspiring to be the next Member of Parliament for Colchester, I am very careful about what promises I make to local residents as I want to make sure that I can fulfil any pledges I do make.

It therefore, saddens me that Colchester Liberal Democrats who lead the Borough Council are planning to introduce a second inflation busting rise in Council Tax.  This is a major U -turn from their 2008 election literature (on which they won control of the council) where they said that that they would have frozen Council Tax. This Council Tax rise comes at the worst time for Colchesterwith many residents losing their jobs or having to take pay cuts. Local residents are feeling the pinch and we expect our Council to tighten it’s belt accordingly.

Colchester Liberal Democrats have controlled the Council for over 18 months now so it is time for them to stop blaming the Conservatives and take responsibility for the financial mismanagement of the Council. The people of Colchester will judge for themselves at the next election where the choice will be between broken promises and Council Tax rises under the Liberal Democrats or a cast iron pledge to freeze Council Tax for two years by the Conservatives.
